For the first time in its 20-year history, the Roy E. Jorgensen Memorial Scholarship was awarded to three students due to the strength of this year’s candidate pool. Sophie Dixon is pursuing her Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering with an emphasis on transportation engineering at California State Polytechnic. Peter Otoshi is pursuing a double major in Civil Engineering and Engineering Physics at California State Polytechnic and has just obtained his EIT. Daniel Cochran is a Brown Scholar pursuing his Bachelor of Science in Engineering at Texas A&M and is a second-time scholarship awardee.
The $15,000 scholarship is awarded annually to qualifying civil engineering senior or graduate students. Established by Jorgensen’s Board of Directors in 2004, the Roy E. Jorgensen Foundation honors the legacy of its founder and his lifelong commitment to advancing the field of highway operations and maintenance. First awarded in 2006, the scholarship continues to support students who demonstrate academic achievement and a commitment to civil engineering.
Roy E. Jorgensen was a licensed professional engineer whose career in transportation engineering and highway maintenance spanned seven decades. A scholarship enabled him to attend the University of California, Berkeley, an experience that shaped his professional path and lifelong dedication to the field. In 1961, he founded Roy Jorgensen Associates with a focus on improving the way transportation infrastructure is managed and maintained — work that continues to guide the company today.
